Indian weddings are all about pomp, spectacle, festivity and, not to mention, dressing for the party. It was also something NIIFT Delhi alum Shilpa Agarwalla loved weddings.
Over five years ago, Shilpa and her family were shopping for her sister’s wedding when they struggled to find the right pair of shoes to complete the traditional look.
âI struggled to find the right shoes that fit my budget for weddings and festive occasions,â says Shilpa.
She remembers that they finally had to settle for a pair of mismatched and very little decorated heels. After working for some of the country’s biggest designers including Anju Modi and others, Shilpa wanted to start his own business.
Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, who run a designer furniture company in Assam, Shilpa started a shoe brand – ShilpSutra – in Delhi in 2015.
Sharing her love for fashion, Shilpa says, âI remember coming home from school impatient and excited to try on outfits, jewelry and shoes from my mom’s wardrobe. While nothing fits me as a child, remembering is something I will always cherish.
While India has many designers of clothing, jewelry, and footwear, it lacked an affordable range of Indian footwear options, which led Shilpa to create a traditional Indian footwear brand.
The Delhi-based brand grew from a small workshop with a karigar now a showroom with a team of 25 people.
ShilpaSutra helps complete the look of big Bollywood celebrities including Kangana Ranaut, Shilpa Shetty, Kriti Sanon, Sara Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Neha Dhupia and many more. The brand’s juttis have also been worn by actress Anushka Sharma in her much-loved and widely circulated wedding photos.
It was in the same vein, Aparna joined fashion brand D2C as a co-founder and launched a clothing line in 2020.
âAfter six months at a multinational company – a Delhi University graduate with a business degree – I realized that I just wasn’t cut out for sorting data and multiplying numbers,â says Aparna. She then completed formal fashion training at the Pearl Academy.
Speaking about how she met Shilpa, Aparna says:
âI was looking to open the store nearby and really liked the space. I realized it was already taken and wanted to meet the person. I met Shilpa and loved the job she was doing. I loved the idea of ââcreating opportunity and hope for artisans amid the COVID-19 pandemic and meeting customer demands with an affordable luxury clothing line.
ShilpaSutra’s shoe collection ranges from Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,999. In its clothing line, the party clothing collection starts at Rs 6,000 and goes up to Rs 12,000. Its couture clothing line starts at Rs 35,000 and goes up to Rs 2 lakh.
âWith a global vision to introduce the most cutting edge, high quality products at affordable prices for the new generation of women, we intend to grow significantly above the growth of the category. To do this, we aim to identify white spaces within our target categories and pursue them strategically, âsay the co-founders of fashion brand D2C.
ShilpaSutra wants to lead its existing categories (footwear and clothing) by expanding into key subcategories.
In addition, the brand wants to expand into new categories, where it has started to put its ideas into practice and hopes to see the result in one to two years.
