B1G Preview: Let’s Go Bowling

The regular season is a wrap, and we’re moving into the mostly absurd bowl season. Where else can you find New Era, Chick-fil-A, and Vrbo all touting their brand names while a bunch of college kids run around for a few hours for exhibition games? Weird clashes between teams that have never faced each other before, in weird and exotic places like Las Vegas, Nashville and Da Bronx. Let’s see what’s going on!

Guaranteed rate bowl
West Virginia (6-6) vs. Minnesota (8-4)

10:15 p.m. EST, Tuesday, December 28, ESPN
Minnesota -3.5

I’m not gonna lie, I expected Penn State to fit into either this bowl or the Las Vegas Bowl. The fact that the Lions skipped three separate 8-4 teams speaks volumes about the extent of Penn State’s tie when it comes time for Bowls to pick their teams. Instead, we see 8-4 in Minnesota fighting .500 in West Virginia. Both teams have had their ups and downs with great wins and dizzying losses. It should be entertaining, if you can stay awake late enough to watch!

Should you watch? I’m an adult, do you think I’m going to stay awake until 1 a.m. to watch this game? Damn no.

Prediction: Minnesota 35, West Virginia 31

New Era pinstripe bowl
Maryland (6-6) vs. Virginie Tech (6-6)

2:15 p.m. EST, Wednesday, December 29, ESPN
Maryland -1

At one point, the Lions seemed destined for the Pinstripe Bowl, but moved up a few ranks. This game should have some storylines that Penn Staters can take a look at – Brent Pry is the new head coach of the Hokies, Maryland is actually not a terrible football team, this is the first bowl game the Lions have ever seen. went under James Franklin. Should be fun!

Should you watch? Yes indeed.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 28, Maryland 24

TransPerfect City Music Bowl
Tennessee (7-5) vs. Purdue (8-4)

3:00 p.m. EST, Thursday, December 30, ESPN
Tennessee -4.5

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little unfair when teams play in their home country? Sometimes it’s inevitable, for the playoffs or New Years games, but for something like that, it just seems a little unfair that Tennessee can play in Nashville. Never mind. Purdue has put on a fun season, but will lose a few key pieces for 2022. This could be the last time we get to watch brave Underdogs in the Black and Gold.

Should you watch? Yeah.

Prediction: Purdue 42, Tennessee 27

7:00 p.m. EST, Thursday, December 30, ESPN
Michigan State -1.5

The first matchup between ranked teams, and damn it, I can’t think of a lot of games that piss me off more than this one. Kenny Pickett is a cool story, even though he takes advantage of rules designed to keep him safe and demands that the NCAA release a mid-season rule update. Michigan State is … well, it’s definitely a team. If ties were possible I would choose a tie for this one, but they don’t pay me a lot of money to shirk my responsibilities!

Should you watch? Uh no.

Prediction: Pitt 28, Michigan 27

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl
Wisconsin (8-4) vs. Arizona State (8-4)

10:30 p.m. EST, Thursday, December 30, ESPN
Wisconsin -7

Man, I was ready to watch Penn State in the middle of the crazy night and then I had Lucy’d and the Lions landed in Tampa. Either way, this game should be fun because of the history between Wisconsin and the state of Arizona. A few years ago, the referees botched the preparation of the ball for a potential Wisconsin field goal attempt, and time has passed for the Badgers. I doubt anyone on either team really cares, but the fans will. They still do.

Should you watch? You bet!

Prediction: Wisconsin 24, Arizona 21

CFP semi-final at Capital One Orange bowl
# 3 Georgia (12-1) vs # 2 Michigan (12-1)

7:30 p.m. EST, Friday, December 31, ESPN
Georgia -7.5

I have to admit that after the Wolverines narrowly escaped Penn State with a win, I thought Ohio state would crush them, and Iowa would at least prevent their attack. None of this happened as Michigan torched their ostensibly tougher foes en route to a playoff berth. Meanwhile, Georgia apparently forgot how to play defense against Bama and suffered their first loss of the season in the SEC Championship game. I hate to say it (I don’t really), but Michigan’s offense isn’t as prolific as Bama’s, and I expect UGA to win somewhat comfortably.

Should you watch? Uhhhh yeah, what kind of question?

Prediction: Georgia 31, Michigan 17

Vrbo citrus bowl
# 15 Iowa (10-3) vs # 22 Kentucky (9-3)

1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Saturday, Jan. 1 ABC
Kentucky -3

The only thing that matters to me in this game is Will Levis, the baby bird who stole the chicken coop, ventured out into the world on his own, and now returns to our lives a majestic, adult eagle. This analogy escaped me a bit, but the point remains. I want to see Levis Smash â„¢ the Hawkeyes in oblivion. But this game is taking place at the same time as Penn State, so I won’t really be able to watch it happen.

Should you watch? When the Lions head for the commercial break, go back to this game and see how many different Levis Smash â„¢ ways.

Prediction: Kentucky 56, Iowa 3

Rose bowl Game Pres. by Capital One Venture X
# 11 Utah (10-3) vs. # 6 Ohio State (10-2)

5:00 p.m. EST, Saturday, January 1 ESPN
Ohio State -6.5

Talk about a story of two teams. Utah comes into that game on fire, having played some of the best football in the country in November, and could very well have been a playoff team without a few slips early in the season. The state of Ohio, meanwhile, is getting into the game after being hit by Michigan in The Game, a rarity to say the least. Will the Buckeyes care enough about playing? Or will the Utes take advantage of their momentum to secure another great victory at the end of the season?

Should you watch? Penn State will be done for the day so yes, absolutely.

Prediction: Utah 27, Ohio State 21
