Bottega Veneta and Daniel Lee have announced their separation. Lee presented his first collection for the Italian luxury goods maker for fall 2019.

Leo Rongone, CEO of Bottega Veneta, said in a statement: “I want to thank Daniel for his dedication … He gave Bottega Veneta a new perspective and a new sense of modernity, while remaining respectful of the 50-year-old of the brand. patrimony. The remarkable growth of the brand over the past three years is a testament to the success of its creative work.

Bottega Veneta was Lee’s first creative director assignment; he was snatched from the Celine studio, where he was director of women’s fashion under Phoebe Philo. Lee’s debut runway collection received mixed reviews, in part because his Bottega Veneta aesthetic was rougher than the one he helped perfect at Celine, but his accessories struck almost instantly. The buttery leather Pouch bag sparked a trend for lightly structured leather bags and its square-toed pumps and sandals had a similar effect on the shoe agenda. Subsequently, he was embraced by the fashion establishment. At the Fashion Awards 2019, held in London in December of that year, Lee was nominated for the top four awards and won them all. Rihanna and Hailey Bieber were both seen in her fringed sheepskin outerwear for the brand.

The pandemic slowed down Lee’s roll, as it did the entire fashion industry. With the traditional system of catwalks in question, Bottega Veneta adopted a salon concept in which the house would present its off-calendar collections to the local public; Lee said he doesn’t believe in digital fashion shows. London was the first, and soon after this show, the brand deleted their social media accounts. A second show in Berlin was a showcase for his studio’s experimental knitwear silhouettes and his flair for improbable color and embellishments, but an after-party attended by unmasked and unvaccinated revelers drew negative press. Last month, Lee and his team presented their spring lineup for the label at the Michigan Theater in Detroit. The collection was a pivot towards a sportier and more relaxed sensibility.

In the same statement, Lee said, “My stay at Bottega Veneta has been an incredible experience. I am grateful to have worked with an exceptional and talented team and I am eternally grateful to everyone who helped create our vision. Thanks to François-Henri Pinault for his support and for the opportunity to be part of the history of Bottega Veneta.

The statement said a “new creative direction” for the house will be announced shortly.
