A Windsor man is charged with vehicular homicide and other charges following a fatal accident while fleeing Susquehanna County police on March 15.
Pennsylvania State Police said Matthew Palmer, 34, was driving a Ford F450 pickup truck at speed on Damascus Road in Harmony Township at 12:47 p.m. when he pulled off the north side of the roadway and brushed against a large tree. .
Soldiers say the van then crossed the north and south lanes before hitting a tree on the south side of the front road, turned and hit a tree to the side and continued to turn, hitting several other trees and a electric pole before coming to a rest on the side of the road against the trees and the electric pole.
Authorities said when the truck spun out of control, front passenger Jeffrey Haines of Deposit, 31, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Palmer was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The truck’s rear passenger, Jennifer McEwen, 22, of Windsor, was not injured.
Troopers reported no injuries to Lanesboro Police Chief James Smith, who was pursuing the van.
The state police press release also does not say why the police were trying to stop Palmer’s vehicle.
State police say Palmer is charged with vehicular homicide, flight or attempted escape from a police officer, manslaughter, reckless endangerment of another person, aggravated assault and several violations.
