Smart manufacturing propels China’s pioneering footwear industry

GUANGZHOU, China, April 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The official site of 131st The Canton Fair is opened on April 15, 2022. A range of innovative products made with new materials, technologies and processes are uploaded by shoe manufacturers. Self-developed foam technology and specialized breathable materials are applied to ensure lightness, elasticity and durability, as well as internal and external air circulation of the shoes, to reduce congestion and keep feet dry. Such innovations have become the norm.

China is one of the most notable players in the global footwear industry. After joining the World Trade Organization, thanks to its social advantage, China Show makers have built a complete industry chain and multiple industry clusters specializing in various footwear categories over more than 20 years of development. These clusters include footwear production bases in Guangdong centered around Canton and Dongguanin Zhejiang around Wenzhou and Taizhou, a women’s shoes production base around Chengdu and Chongqing and the Fujian sports shoes production base around Quanzhou and Jinjiang.

With the deepening of China Intelligent manufacturing strategy, the Canton Fair actively motivated exhibitors to keep innovating. In recent years, more and more shoe exhibitors have benefited from independent innovation and gradually got rid of the “original equipment manufacturer” (OEM) labels, switching to high-end intelligent manufacturing and the expansion of the brand abroad.

Among the Chinese brands, represented by ANTA, Li-Ning and Xtep, some have made breakthroughs in materials and processes to move from the market of sports and leisure shoes to professional sports such as marathon, weightlifting and boxing. Some brands are actively adopting the trend of digital innovation, promoting the shoe manufacturing industry’s integration with the Internet, big data, robots and standardization, and introducing high-end intelligent assembly lines to control the manufacturing costs and improve efficiency.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Commerce, in 2021, China exports of shoes and boots reached $47.9 billion, up 35% year-on-year, with export prices maintaining an upward trend of 15%. The footwear industry and supply chains showed strong momentum, helping to stabilize foreign trade.

Alan LiuDeputy Director General of the Canton Fair Foreign Affairs Bureau said, “At 131st Canton Fair, we will help enterprises develop new channels, promote domestic-international dual circulation, and enable convenient China-brand shoes to make their trip around the globe.”
