TENKASI: A Hindu woman of one caste was convicted under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Atrocity Prevention) Act for allegedly beating a sweeper, belonging to the Arunthathiyar community, with her shoes in a textile factory of Gomathipuram.

According to Sankarankovil Taluk police, the suspect, L Parameswari from Panjakulam, and the victim, S Ramakrishnan from Puliyampatti, worked in a private textile factory. In a video widely shared on social media, Parameswari is seen beating Ramakrishnan with his shoes on.

“A few days ago, Ramakrishnan advised Parameswari not to waste water in the toilet. Angered by this, Parameswari hurled “caste insults” at him and also made the problem worse. Following an investigation, the factory administration reportedly asked Parameswari to apologize to Ramakrishnan for his comments, ”sources said.

Opposing the management’s decision, factory workers R Raja and P Gowtham, members of an intermediate caste, threatened to strike. “In this situation, Parameswari beat Ramakrishnan with his shoes on and this was clearly recorded by CCTV cameras,” sources added. Based on a complaint from Ramakrishnan, the police booked Parameswari. Raja and Gowtham have also been appointed to the FIR.
