The Sandals Foundation aims to inspire Caribbean youth through football

The Sandals Foundation at Sandals Resorts has partnered with Dutch team AFC Ajax to launch Future Goals. The program takes fishing nets found in the ocean and recycled plastic waste and creates soccer goals for children to use.

Future Goals began on the island of Curacao, where Sandals Resorts International recently made its debut with the opening of Sandals Royal Curacao.

Through Future Goals, the companies aim to provide opportunities for local children through sports, especially football, locally known as football.

“Ajax is on a mission to impact the future of football globally, starting with the youngsters, our next generation,” said AFC Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar. “Together with Sandals Resorts and the Sandals Foundation, we look forward to facilitating impactful soccer programs for children in Curacao and the rest of the Caribbean, realizing the opportunities of tomorrow through the fun of today.”

Working with Limpi, a local plastic recycling company on the island, Sandals plans to supply goals to four dozen elementary schools in Curacao. Along with the goals, Adidas plans to participate and provide more than 600 soccer balls to children.

The program also includes plans for an island-wide football tournament which will include all participating schools. There are also plans to expand this initiative to other Caribbean islands.

“Future Goals brilliantly encapsulates Sandals’ unwavering commitment to empowering our Caribbean islands through our philanthropic arm, the Sandals Foundation, and our fundamental pillars of education, environment and community,” said said Heidi Clarke, executive director of the Sandals Foundation.

According to Kevin Clarke, general manager of Sandals Royal Curacao, the company was able to deliver the first set of future goals before the resort officially opened, representing Sandals’ commitment to the destination.

“It is our responsibility not only to ensure that we share this beautiful part of the world with our guests, but that we protect and preserve it for the locals who make everyone who visits it feel at home,” explained Clarke.
