Socks with sandals have always been a controversial fashion trend. (Is it a trend if people mostly don’t care?) Some people love the comfort of the socks and sandals band, while others are utterly bewildered by the pairing, blown away that anyone would think even to cover their feet with socks and then slip into a pair of open-toed sandals. And for good reason. The age-old faux pas is certainly a major contradiction, as sandals are designed to keep you cool while socks keep them warm.
Despite the general disdain, fashion is cyclical and the look comes back into our lives every few years, giving brave souls and celebrities another chance to let off steam in their socks. Celebrities like Pharrell Williams, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Tyler The Creator, Kendall Jenner, Sophie Turner and David Beckham have all been spotted sporting the socks and sandals look.
This latest iteration of this look aligns with another trend of the moment – the popularity of “daddy fashion,” which includes dad shoes, daddy hats, daddy jeans, and so on. There is also the great pandemic of 2020 to consider, as it has undoubtedly made comfortable clothing and athleisure more general public.
These factors, along with the current trend for ugly footwear, have made socks and sandals a thing again, especially for those who find the look easy, comfortable, and dare we say it, fashionable.
That’s right, I’m not afraid to wear socks and sandals, and neither should you. For fans of this controversial look, our time has finally come.
Whether you’ve tried it or just want to learn more, we’ve got all the tips you need to change up the look as well as some of our favorite pairs of socks and sandals to help you customize your look.
But first, let’s start with a few basics. Please, for the love of all holy things (pun intended) make sure your socks have no holes in them. Also make sure they are clean. As seriously, we beg you. If you are looking for a stylish look, dirty socks with holes in them will instantly kill the mood. So please don’t.
Now that this is fixed, you will want to associate your clean socks with the right sandal. Easy slip-on and strappy shoes like Birkenstock, Crocs, or Suits you, luxury shoes such as Yeezy Foam Runners or Gucci slides, and sporty slides from Adidas or Nike, etc. are all suitable to wear with socks. That said, however, you’ll probably want to avoid flip flops or other sandals that have to go between your toes. It just doesn’t look – or feel – good when your socks have to fold up to fit the shoe and you’ll probably end up regretting it after a few minutes or hours of walking in discomfort.
Crew socks still works well with the look. However, you can even go up to the knee or ankle if you’re feeling adventurous. If you really want to make a statement, you can invest in designer socks like the popular ones. Gucci logo socks. Plus, don’t feel like you have to stray from the patterns with this look. This look is all about casual fun and the novelty socks provide the perfect opportunity to show off your personality. It’s also a good time to experiment with the high-low mix, pairing a high-end sock with a cheaper shoe or vice versa.
